Pre-Sprouting Seeds

…Locally Grown…Sustainable…Freshly Picked… Chemical-Free…

Carrots, parsnips, beets, chard and parsley can take between 14 to 21 days to germinate; that means the seed bed must be kept evenly moist for up to three weeks or longer.

This year, in an effort to provide our CSA Share Members with a fresh spring crop of delicious organic carrots we are  pre-sprouting our carret seeds in a gel mixture. Our pre-sprouting gel mixture is simple to make: 1 cup of water to 1 teaspoon of cornstarch.  The gel mixture is boiled and thickened then poured into a zip top plastic bag with the seeds. After a few days, once the seeds germinate it’s time to plant them. Planting is easy, cut a slit in a corner of the  zip lock bag, and slowly squeeze the mixture into the shallow trench. Cover and voila.
